His Beatitude Nerses Petros XIX

Biography of
Gregory Petros V Kupelian
(1788-1812)

Founder of seminary and founder of Seat order

He was from St. Antoine's order. "Historians witnessed that he was an admirable man".

In the days of Gregory V, different classes of clergies, spiritual leaders, missioners, preachers and married priests worked in the patriarchal eparchies. All were impressed with a pastoral ardor, but they hadn't severe hierarchal relations, nor the same education. Therefore, it was the time to establish the Armenian Catholic patriarchate which was existing more than half century. It was necessary to establish a patriarchal seminary. This became the biggest organized activity of Gregory V. The plan was big and expensive. And the providence helped him.

Due to the benevolence of two Armenian Catholic jewelers Michael Ohannes Papoumian and Etvart Raphael Gharamiantsi, living in Madras, Gregory V succeeded to build the seminary of the Seat, 1797-1810. He wrote also the internal regulations book of the seminary, the agenda and the godly instructions.

In his days, the number of monks increased to 52, among them 4 bishops, 4 preachers, 10 priests, and the newly consecrated and the working brothers.

All of them were in Lebanon, where were taking place the conflicts between Jazzar and Emir Bachir II (1799).
